What if your next healthcare lesson involved a 12-year-old soccer player experiencing a potential heatstroke emergency? MCCC seniors in Sports Medicine & Exercise Science got a hands-on look at emergency assessment thanks to Tina Myers, MCCC Adult Education Director of Nursing Programs, and Hal Jr., one of the school’s high-tech simulation manikins!

During her classroom visits, Tina is introducing students to the healthcare career pathways available right here in Medina through MCCC Adult Education. In Chris Watson’s Sports Medicine & Exercise Science classes, students worked in teams to assess Hal’s condition, check his blood pressure, heart rate and respiration, monitor changes, and recommend next steps in his care. They also practiced communicating their findings to first responders.

The experience allowed students to put their classroom knowledge into action while developing skills relevant to a wide range of healthcare careers, including athletic training, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing and physician assistant roles.

Tina also visited Allied Health & Medical Assisting students to discuss opportunities available after graduation, whether they currently plan to enter the workforce or continue their education. She shared that her own nursing career took a different path, beginning when she was in her 30s, reminding students that there is no single timeline for pursuing a healthcare career.

Students also learned about MCCC Adult Education’s new healthcare simulation lab under construction at South Campus. The facility will include a long-term care room, an intensive care unit (ICU) room, and two dual-purpose exam and testing rooms. The lab will allow students to practice in realistic clinical settings while instructors observe their work and control the simulation manikins’ vital signs and responses to student actions. Medical Assisting students even had the opportunity to listen to Hal Jr.’s heart, lung and bowel sounds!

Tina highlighted MCCC Adult Education’s healthcare programs as an affordable way to explore a variety of career options close to home. Programs include Certified Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy Technician, Medical Assisting and the new Practical Nursing (LPN) program, launching in January 2027. As the only LPN program offered in Medina County, it provides an exciting local pathway for aspiring nurses. Financial aid and free tuition opportunities are available to eligible students.

From responding to a simulated emergency to exploring hands-on healthcare training, MCCC students got a firsthand look at where their interests could take them. Thanks to Tina and Hal Jr., healthcare careers feel a little closer to home—and MCCC Adult Education is ready to help students take the next step!
