MCCC Staff Go Above and Beyond with Military-Themed Learning Experiences
June was a busy and exciting month for several MCCC staff members, who spent part of their summer engaging in military-themed professional development experiences.
Purple Star Program Coordinators Darlene Cavett and Patrick Shaughnessy kicked off the month in San Antonio, Texas, participating in the Trilateral Army Recruiting Battalion Educators Tour on June 10–11. This annual event invites educators to visit a military installation, providing them with an extensive look at the daily operations, readiness training, and educational opportunities available to military trainees.
Later in the month, Cavett and Shaughnessy attended the Ohio Purple Star Summit near Columbus on June 18. The summit brought together Purple Star Liaisons from across the state to network, share best practices, and reaffirm their commitment to supporting military-connected students. A highlight of the trip was a moving visit to the Ohio Fallen Heroes Memorial.
Cavett capped off her month with a remarkable—and airborne—experience: joining the U.S. Army Golden Knights for a parachute jump. Her participation reflects a deep personal commitment to understanding the full range of military opportunities available to students—going, quite literally, above and beyond!
Meanwhile, science instructors Julie Bengough and Zach Holdridge were selected to attend the United States Marine Educators Workshop at Parris Island, South Carolina. This immersive program gave them a comprehensive view of Marine Corps life through physical training activities, obstacle courses, and guided tours of the base. It was a hands-on and eye-opening experience into the discipline and dedication involved in Marine recruit training.
We are proud of our dedicated staff members for their ongoing efforts to learn, grow, and support our military-connected students and future service members. Their commitment ensures that MCCC continues to be a strong advocate for students exploring military pathways.
