A holiday lunchtime music event brought an unexpected burst of energy, connection, and joy to the Medina County Career Center this December, transforming an ordinary day into a memorable experience for students and staff alike. Organized by Software Engineering instructor Ryan McMaster, the idea was inspired by a meaningful childhood memory: his fourth-grade teacher, who, though not a music teacher, occasionally shared his talents as a musician with his class. Those moments left a lasting impression, showing how powerful it can be when teachers reveal creative sides of themselves beyond the classroom.
To make the event possible, McMaster enlisted a group of longtime friends and musicians he has played with for years. On drums was his twin brother Jamie, with whom he has been making music his entire life. Joining them was Jesse Smith, a retired carpentry teacher from Wadsworth High School and a versatile, highly accomplished musician, as well as Bob Costello on bass, another close friend and seasoned performer. Then, he enlisted an enthusiastic group of MCCC staff members including instructors Heidi Chapman, Bobbi Eggeman, Shawn Fitzgerald, Dana Paden and John Skarl, school counselor Kelli Esakov, administrative assistant Stacy Thornburg, and even our own School Resource Officer, Deputy Snider! Even the Grinch couldn’t resist joining the ensemble – but the true highlight came when dozens of students gathered at the front to join in, creating an atmosphere that felt more like a community celebration than a school lunch period.
The goal of the event was simple: to bring something different to the school day and make lunchtime more enjoyable. It exceeded expectations. Teachers who participated played a key role in setting the tone, demonstrating to students that school can be a place of shared joy and connection. Ryan expressed special thanks to Mrs. Esakov and Mrs. Eggeman, whose enthusiasm and encouragement from the very beginning helped turn the idea into reality. By sharing the gift of music, the event offered students a break from screens, added positive energy to the school, and reminded everyone of the power of coming together to share the holiday spirit. Let’s hope this becomes an annual event!
