Exciting things are happening at MCCC! The Vision Care program—currently the only high school program of its kind in Ohio—is stepping into the spotlight with a brand-new, state-of-the-art lab in a prime, front-and-center location of the MCCC building.
This major upgrade features the latest in optical technology, including an OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) unit that can capture high-resolution images of the retina, a Visual Field VR headset, and a tonopen to check intraocular pressure. Plus, with the addition of an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, students will gain hands-on experience with the same digital tools used in real-world clinics—giving them a serious head start in the field.
The enhanced lab is designed to simulate an actual optometrist’s office, allowing students to experience every aspect of patient care. One of the most exciting features? Students will be able to make glasses on-site! These services support the program’s free community vision initiative, the Bright Eyedeas Vision Clinic—an incredible opportunity for students to give back while honing their skills.
And speaking of coming full circle, next year’s clinic will feature a very special guest appearance: two 2018 MCCC graduates—twin brothers who are now Doctors of Optometry—will be returning to provide eye exams, along with Dr. Sandra Travaglianti (Retina Associates of Cleveland)! Dr. Joshua Stefan and Dr. Nathan Stefan, who received their degrees this spring, are thrilled to give back to the program that launched their careers.
Originally launched in 2007 as the Optical Technology program, Vision Care has grown and thrived under the leadership of instructor Amanda Peshek. Today, it prepares students for success across the entire optical industry—from clinical care to lab work to customer service.
With new technology, an expanded clinic, and a growing network of alumni, the future of Vision Care at MCCC is brighter than ever!
