The Phlebotomy Technician program is a hands-on, comprehensive course designed for students new to the industry. Phlebotomy Technicians are primarily responsible for collecting and preparing blood samples for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists primarily seek employment in hospital and clinic settings, but also work in nursing homes, private home care, the insurance industry, and research institutions. Students will be prepared to collect, transport, and process blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis.

The program includes:

  • Phlebotomy Basics
  • Specimen Collection
  • Specimen Handling
  • Professional Issues
  • American Heart CPR Certification

All students will be required to complete a minimum of 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary needle sticks to be eligible to sit for the certification examination. Upon successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Certified Phlebotomy Technician Examination administered by the National Healthcareer Association. Textbook costs are included.

Requirements Before Start of Course

  • Recent physical (within 8 months of start date)
  • Hepatitis B Test
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Test: two-step or QuantiFERON
  • Vaccination Records: MMR, Tdap, Chicken Pox

Phlebotomy Technician Job Outlook According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (SOC Code 31-9097). Employment of phlebotomists is projected to grow 8 percent from 2022 to 2032, faster than the average for all occupations. About 19,500 openings for phlebotomists are projected each year, on average, over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to different occupations or exit the labor force, such as to retire. The median annual wage for phlebotomists was $41,810 in May 2023.
