Selective Service System

All males between the age of 18-25 must register for the Selective Service System. It is important to know that even though a man is registered, he will not automatically be inducted into the military.

Benefits: By registering, a young man stays eligible for jobs, college loans and grants, job training, driver’s license in most states and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men.

Repercussions: Failing to register or comply with the Military Selective Service Act is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000, a prison term of up to five years or a combination of both. Also, a person who knowingly counsels, aids or abets another to fail to comply with the Act is subject to the same penalties.

ASVAB

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a heavily researched and well-respected aptitude test developed by the Department of Defense. It measures a young adult’s strengths and potential for success in military training. ASVAB scores are used to determine if you are qualified to enlist in the military and to assign you to an appropriate job in the military.

There are two versions of the test:

  • The enlistment version of the ASVAB is given at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) and is used for recruiting purposes only.
  • The student testing program, also known as the ASVAB Career Exploration Program (CEP), is used for career exploration and is given in high schools and community colleges, at job corps centers and at correctional facilities.
