Gain the administrative knowledge and skills needed to work successfully in a medical office environment. This course has 500 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours in a hybrid format. Topics include:

  • Basic Computer Skills (Microsoft Office)

  • Legal and Ethical Issues
  • Patient Registration and Admissions
  • Electronic Medical Records
  • Electronic Health Records
  • Emergency Preparedness and Assisting with Medical Emergencies
  • CPR
  • Financial and Practical Management Skills
  • Basics of Medical Billing, Coding, and Insurance
  • Medical Terminology Specific to ICD-10
  • Resume Writing, Interviewing, and Job Readiness
  • Observation Hours

Qualifying students will sit for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) Exam and the Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) exam, Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) exam, and National Career Readiness assessments (ACT WorkKeys). College credit is available through Career Technical Credit Transfer (CT)2.

 Job Outlook for Secretaries & Administrative Assistants According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (CIP:51.0710):

Employment of medical secretaries is projected to grow 11% or higher from 2020 to 2030. Employment growth will be driven by rapid growth of the healthcare and social assistance industries. An anticipated increase in the use of medical services by an aging population will require many additional secretaries. The median annual wage for medical secretaries was $35, 500 in January of 2022.
